The water used for the morning wash was never thrown out. It was used to wash one's hands before and after meals; one would plunge one's hands deep into the basin to avoid the layer of greasy filth that lay on the surface, scrub and wash them away from the basin, with the straw brush always resting on a root of the walnut tree, and dry them in the wind. In the evening, the water would finally be poured into the big tins, in the stables, to thicken the animals' food.
